Satellites show polar ice loss driven mainly by glaciers flowing faster
A 42-survey reconstruction published on 16 September 2026 puts combined Greenland and Antarctic ice loss at 11,309 billion tonnes since 1979, and attributes 84 per cent of it to accelerating glaciers rather than surface melt.
