Privacy Policy
What Shurman Media collects when you create an account, comment or vote, why, and how to ask us to delete it. We collect as little as the site needs to work.
Who this is
Shurman Media is published by 2Tech Computing Inc., Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada. For anything in this policy, write to editor@shurman.ca; see the Contact page.
What we collect
Reading the site does not require an account and we do not track you to do it. Creating a reader account to comment or vote collects: the email address and display name you give us, your password (stored as an irreversible hash, never in readable form), and the IP address of your sign-up and sign-ins, kept to stop abuse such as fake accounts and vote manipulation. A comment you post is kept with your display name and the time it was posted. A vote records which reader cast it, so one reader cannot vote twice on the same story or comment.
Signing in sets one cookie, readable only by this site, that identifies your session. We do not run third-party advertising trackers. If advertising is ever turned on for the site, it is shown only after a visitor consents, and only to visitors who consented, consistent with our existing geo and consent settings.
What we do not do
We do not sell personal information. We do not share your email address with anyone outside 2Tech Computing Inc. except a service we use to send account emails (confirming a new account, resetting a password), which sees only the address needed to send that one message.
Why we collect it
To let you sign in, comment and vote; to stop one person or bot from creating many accounts or voting more than once; and to run the site’s own operation (an email from the automated system to the publisher about how the site is doing, which contains no reader data).
How long we keep it
For as long as your account exists, and for a reasonable period after in case of a dispute about a comment or vote. Write to us and we will delete your account and the personal information tied to it, other than what we are required to keep by law or need to keep briefly to resolve an open report.
Your rights
Under Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA), you can ask what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, and ask us to delete your account. Write to editor@shurman.ca and we will respond within a reasonable time.
Children
Shurman Media is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13.
Changes
